Der Graben, jener Platz im Herzen Wiens, der sich vom Befestigungsgraben des römischen Militärlagers Vindobona zum hochmittelalterlichen Marktplatz, dann zum Mittelpunkt religiöser und höfischer Festlichkeiten und schließlich zum Treffpunkt der vornehmen Gesellschaft und der Demimonde wandelte, erweckte seit langem das Interesse der Lokalhistoriker. Pezzl, Gräffer, Realis und Schimmer beschäftigten sich mit ihm ebenso wie zahlreiche Besucher Wiens: der Platz spielt in den meisten Reisebeschreibungen eine bedeutende Rolle und wird aus mannigfachen Gründen auch in vielen Memoiren farbenprächtig geschildert.
