Es geschieht nicht oft, daß die Demolierung eines alten Gebäudes weltweites Aufsehen erregt, wie es im Herbst 1903 geschah, als aus Wien die Nachricht kam, das Schwarzspanierhaus werde demnächst abgebrochen. Das unscheinbare Haus war von unvergleichlicher Bedeutung, weil Beethoven darin seine letzten Jahre verbracht hatte und dort gestorben war. Keines der zahlreichen anderen Quartiere Beethovens war mit seinem Namen so verbunden wie dieses, nicht einmal das Pasqualatihaus, das er fast zehn Jahre lang bewohnt hat.
