Wer heute den Spuren von Rudolf Kalvach nachgeht, begegnet rasch dem Namen Oskar Kokoschka. Kalvach war schon mehrere Jahre Schüler an der Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule, als Kokoschka im Studienjahr 1906/07 in seine Klasse dazustieß. Ihr gemeinsamer Lehrer der Fachschule für Malerei und Zeichnen, Carl Otto Czeschka, berichtete über Kokoschkas Ankunft: „Im Oktober wies ich Koko einen grossen Tisch an — am Fenster. Sein Nachbar war Kalvach, der Kroate— der Sohn eines sympatischen, braven Lokomotivführers.
