"Captured by the Blurk"
by Delilah Dunn
self-published, 2014
ISBN 9781310567674; Smashwords digital edition (EPUB), ~1,800 words

Review Date: March, 2014

Although I gave "Captured by the Alien", Delilah Dunn's first self-published short story in the "Captured by..." series, an objective 1.5 stars, I really did enjoy its absurdism and decided to give the author another try. Her second story, "Captured by the Blurk" is, like her first, available as a free download from Smashwords, and it I found it a worthwhile read. It's a brief tale of fewer than 2,000 words, in which a young woman's apartment is broken into by an alien being made up of hard light, which proceeds to initiate friendly interstellar contact by having sex with her. It's more just entertaining than truly erotic, although it is explicit, and It's just as absurd as "Captured by the Alien" but slightly better written. Overall a decent read for the price and length.

Rating:

2 stars: It was OK. Whereas many reviewers tend to be more generous, most works I rate receive two or three stars. At this rating, all my expectations have been met; there are few technical, conventional, or factual flaws, if any, and I found the work to be mildly entertaining and/or sufficiently informative, but it wouldn't be at the top of my list of recommendations. There is a bit of subjectivity at work: some otherwise three-star works might end up here simply because their genre or subject matter doesn't appeal to me. Equivalent to a school grade of 'C', or average. ( )
