This book, while offering constructive advice on preaching sermons from the Pauline Epistles, is strongest in chapters 3 and 4 which deal with the Hermeneutical Journey. Nancy Lammers Gross' methodology for sermon development is easily adopted to other texts besides epistles. Though it may be suited well to awakening what could be considered dry reading in Pauline letters, it can also enliven texts that have been preached time and again through the revised common lectionary or a lectionary of our own making as preachers. Swinging between discernment and questions to textual and commentary research allows the preacher to pair it with other methodologies which may be more determinative of the final form of the sermon. Gross' method allows the text to become 'strange' again so that even the most experienced preacher can find something new within a text though they have preached it for decades. Her method paired with Proctor, Lowry, Long or Wilson takes into account concerns raised by Tisdale and also allows the Spirit to speak such as Forbes has advocated. Her rationale and explanation of what I would call the Hermeneutical Swing method provide a scholarly approach to the mystery of unfolding revelation in preaching. ( )
