Saroyan was an uneven writer; there are a few stories here that make me wonder how they even got published. But in the best of them, he draws the reader without concious effort into a world of carelessly compassionate human beings, trying to make a success of themselves in a harsh world, but it's okay if they don't, and finishes the story with a sentence so sublimely simple and wise it takes the breath away. If only Saroyan had had a better editor, perhaps. The best stories here are "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze", "The Barber Whose Uncle Had His Head Bitten Off by a Circus Tiger", "The Sunday Zeppelin", "The Brothers and the Sisters", "The Great Leapfrog Contest", "The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse", "The Pomegranate Trees", and "My Cousin Dikran, the Orator".
