The inner struggle and the burden that had been put on the mc . . . showcase how most children get told how they would be and who they should become. I cannot wait to read the next volume. ( ) Alvarez transforms the classic archetype of the hero's journey into the story of Star, the black foal who is destined to be either a healer or a destroyer if he survives his first year and receives the power of the Hundred Year Star. Alvarez populates her fantastical world of good and evil with five pegasi colonies battling for power and peace. A very engaging story for older children and children-at-heart. I'm excited to read the next book in this new series! I think this would work for readers who like the Warriors series, but want something a bit more "grown up." It's got a lot of the same themes, just with more violence. I can think of a few kids off the top of my head who would be into it. It's also got extensive descriptions of the colors of each pegasus, which I would probably have loved as a kid. As an adult reader, I found it pretty meh. But I'm also not a Warriors fan, so ymmv. no reviews | add a review
