Review to come ( ) Ok, so there may have been a point where I was so sure I had read this exact book before that I had to look up my goodreads account to make sure, but the book swiftly moved off from that somewhat repetitive survivor's club beginning and into a sweet and lovely romance. I love the spark of our heroiine (with great stealth, indeed) and I appreciate the unselfpitying stubborness of our hero. I also enjoy meddling estranged grandfathers, so altogether Hooray, hooray! Sort of middle of the road for me. I liked the characters decently but didn't feel super attached. And they were kind of sweet together but I wasn't really caught up emotionally. And I tend to like road trip romances and heroes working through something significant (which this one definitely was). Balogh is a good writer, I just wasn't especially feeling this one. Not bad, just fine. I have been a Mary Balogh fan maybe for 20 years plus. Have read many of her books This one was an absolute disappointment. She is stuck in a situation not of her liking . He is stuck in a situation not of his liking. They talk and talk and talk. It is not very witty talk. Not particularly engaging. Not particularly interesting. The characters are bland. The book is bland. Couldn't wait for it to end. no reviews | add a review

"After surviving the Napoleonic Wars, Sir Benedict Harper is struggling to move on, his body and spirit in need of a healing touch. Never does Ben imagine that hope will come in the form of a beautiful woman who has seen her own share of suffering. After the lingering death of her husband, Samantha McKay is at the mercy of her oppressive in-laws--until she plots an escape to distant Wales to claim a house she has inherited. Being a gentleman, Ben insists that he escort her on the fateful journey. Ben wants Samantha as much as she wants him, but he is cautious. What can a wounded soul offer any woman? Samantha is ready to go where fate takes her, to leave behind polite society and even propriety in her desire for this handsome, honorable soldier. But dare she offer her bruised heart as well as her body? The answers to both their questions may be found in an unlikely place: in each other's arms."--from cover, page [4].
