"De wereld" van Plinius is een voorbeeldig uitgegeven boek, een mooie hardcover, prettige bladspiegel, mooie hoofdstukindeling, een prettig leesbaar lettertype en vooral ook een goed leesbare vertaling. De vraag rijst op of het boek al die moeite waard is. De wereld is een soort van encyclopedisch overzicht van alle kennis die in de eerste eeuw na Christus in Rome bekend was. Er zitten zeker lezenswaardige stukken in, maar het merendeel zijn losse onsamenhangende feitjes. Ik ben gestopt met lezen op blz 203 van 743 blz. Misschien dat ik ooit de rest nog eens lees. ( )
