A brutal, compelling military sci fi read that totally enmeshed me.

Midshipman William Grace awakens to killing cold and distant gunshots. The carrier on which he served crashed instead of entering orbit, killing most of the 2000 crew aboard. Grace gathers the handful of survivors and fights to keep them that way, while working toward completing the starship's mission.

The fight is never easy, the climax isn't contrived or gentle, and the setbacks are realistic. There are some grammatical oopses throughout, more of course toward the ending, but there was never a point where the meaning wasn't clear. And best of all, the story is entirely shown, not a sentence of telling, and while I had some confusion in spots, it never interfered with understanding or enjoying the story.

A first class book. Four and a half stars, a half removed for the occasional oops. Casey Calouette is an author to watch. ( )

Great start. Can't wait to read the next one. A little obscure in some areas leaving a lot to the imagination. But that's good too. Worth while compared to a lot of other books in this genre. Highly recommended for those who dig the military sci-fi. ( )
