I guess I'll have to say The Terror by Dan Simmons as it's the only fiction book I've read set in a polar region. I'll be looking into some of the suggestions here, though. They look good :) #128, My wife read The Terror and enjoyed it very much. I think it is horror more than SF. My wife devours horror, but not so much the SF. ... ... if we're going to count the Franklin mess as Canadian, you could check out The broken lands by Robert Edric and The Terror by Dan Simmons
Louis Riel by chester Brown, a comic book, but full of historical detail
I enjoyed Jane Urquhart's, The Whirlpool. It was about a widow ... 87. Violet Wings by Victoria Hanley
88. The Terror by Dan Simmons ... in victorian London or The Crook Factory for an Ernest Hemmingway adventure in espionage in Cuba at the beginning of WW2. The Terror, a story about the failed effort by the Franklin Expedition to seek the Northern Passage, may have more historical facts but harder to read. The Terror by Dan Simmons
1. I won it from a blog giveaway at http://bermudaonion.wordpress.com/
2. It cost me nothing.
3. When I first got it I was daunted by its size but finally worked up the courage to start it.
4. I’ve had it about 6 months.
5. What I like best about the ... ... around 40 degrees in the mornings all week. The timing couldn't have been more perfect for me to start reading Dan Simmons' The Terror. ... last night. It wasn't bad, but it just did not hold my interest.
Started in on Dan Simmons' historical horror novel, The Terror, which is great so far. Would Dan Simmon's The Terror count?
And of course the comic book within a comic book in Watchmen? "Mr. Hale had the duty, sir."

"Protected by what?" ... lantern light through the foot-long holes in the hull, but in the centre is something much more disturbing -- blackness.
The Terror by Dan Simmons ... ndeed!
Oh wait - are you thinking it wasn't Nunavut when the book was set? I was just thinking the same could be true of The Terror. Hmmmm. Maybe we need a group judgement call? I was fascinated by Crozier as a character in The Terror and will be looking for this one. Thanks. ... John Boyne. Brilliant concept.
44. Wanting by Richard Flanagan. For those who have read Dan Simmons's The Terror and Drood, you'll be especially amused by this one.
45. Still Alice by Lisa Genova. Loved it.
46. Jenna Starborn by Sharon Shinn. Too ... A gruesome historical thriller, The Terror makes a great, chilly beach read. I'm currently reading Urban Gothic as well. If it's Keene, it's a good read.
The Terror is also a good one, but not as good as Carrion Comfort in my opinion. Like Keene, it's hard to go wrong with Simmons.
The Keep is a great place to start with Wilson's works. I've read the Adversa ... I started The Terror by Dan Simmons just before bedtime last night. The Terror by Dan Simmons is an excellent fictionalized account of Captain John Franklin's lost expedition to the Arctic 1845 - 1848. ... read The Last Dickens by Matthew Pearl, which chronicled Dickens' years as an actor, shortly before his death, and The Terror by Dan Simmons, the novel of the Franklin expedition to the Northwest Passage.

I'll do a separate post for non-fiction. But my real goal is to read 15,000 pages in both fiction and non-fiction, because I think it's ... I think I can do mine now:
1. The Terror by Dan Simmons (4 1/2 stars)

I have now started Little Women so that I can read Geraldine Brooks' March. I have never read Little Women and clearly I am doing so in the wrong time of my life. I am finding it discustingly syrupy. My wife was pretty impressed with the Terror, but then again, this is the person who convinced me to read The Stand. That was a major mistake in my literary career. I've read one Stephen King novel and feel qualified to pronounce on him from that one encounter, which of course is BS. However, ... ... mysteries. But it always nice spending time with Kinsey again. I love her wry humor.
Now I am reading Dan Simmons' The Terror. I am totally captivated by this artic horror/ historical fiction tale. Add me in the fans of The Terror by Simmons, but I also like Arctic expedition stories (also Antarctic), and it didn't hurt to be reading it in the middle of snow and cold of St. Louis a year ... Pottering along with Drood. As with The Terror, it's not very scary at all. It is interesting though. ...
The Memory Keepers Daughter, however I liked a lot.
Arsonists Guide Terrible!
My own terrible read was The Terror At about a third of the way in, I can only say that events related to The Terror are referenced at least once by Simmons in Drood.
:) So is Drood sort of a sequel to The Terror in a way, since Dickens is affected by the discovery of cannibalism?
If so, that just makes me want to read it even more. Glad you enjoyed The Terror, RebeccaAnn, it is an amazing piece of work. A lot of the classic non-fiction accounts of polar exploration, such as Apsley Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World can be riveting and harrowing. I enjoyed how Simmons took just such a test of human ... I read The Terror earlier this year and loved it! At the time, I didn't know the Franklin expedition was something that had actually happened. Since then, I've been reading various nonfiction books about the Franklin expedition and I am astounded at how much fact Dan Simmons put into his book. Yes ... I've had to put The Terror on hold. It was my bedtime reading book - hard cover, too heavy to carry to work/around- and every night just before I was thinking of putting the book down and going to sleep, something creepy would happen. Then I couldn't get to sleep. It's hard to work a 13 hour ... Now what do I do? Should I keep The Terror on the list or take it off? Decisions, decisions!! LOL I think I just saw The Terror on my shelves... wonder which camp I'll be on IF I ever pick it up :)
I'd come back here just to see the cute emoticons :) While I originally added The Terror to my tbr list, after your recent comments, I'm removing it from the pile. Thanks for saving me the time wasted in reading it. There are so many wonderful books out there -- why waste energy eh? ... Then I have an arc to read..
but now, on to housekeeping stuff ( bleh) and back later.
eta:
The reason I hated The Terror was it was front to back misery, in my opinion.
No one was warm, happy, loved, comfortable..content.. nothing good.
I hoped the end would redeem the book, so ... Oh, well, I guess I do not have any of the lovely qualities Richard mentions in message 214 because I read The Terror last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sorry that you did not, Kath, and I sincerely hope that your next read is better for you! Agreed. I liked The Terror, but I can see how it wouldn't work for some! #93: Sorry you are not enjoying The Terror Kath. I hope your next read is better for you! ... maybe the library?
I haven't read Brisingr yet, but I will. I have read the first two.
I have been slogging through The Terror all week. It is akin to
beating myself with a big stick. Avoid it at all cost. Tonight will see the end
of it, and tomorrow it will be The Little Stranger ... ... to find the Northwest Passage to the Pacific that ended in disaster, even a fictional version by Dan Simmons called The Terror. Both Drood and The Terror are near the top of my tbr pile. I think I'll read The Terror and listen to Drood. We'll see.
Right now I'm reading London under Midnight by Simon Clark. I've never read anything by him before and started this one after I read a good review of Vengeance Child. My ... Well finished The Terror. I must say after a good beginning, I'm seriously underwhelmed. Oh well, hopefully Drood will be better, if it ever finally arrives from bloody Amazon.com. I love that quote from Little Bee loosha.
I finished The Terror by Dan Simmons last week, roaming around in the Arctic with the remnants of Franklin's expedition. It felt very chilly after that and I wanted to warm up so I'm reading Seer of Egypt now by Pauline Gedge. I love her ... The Terror has been on my TBR list for awhile and it sits waiting for me. I'm adding The Terror to the ever growing tbr pile.
Yes, The Terror was a good read! Man, I want to say more, but it's hard to do that without giving some things away...8^} ... of Bohjahlian's books..I have read every one.
I gave Wicked away unread, I just couldn't get into it.
I am reading The Terror and suspect I will be for a few days...it is good~ but~ #199: I thought The Terror very good when I read it last year (I admit, though, that I am drawn to stories of Arctic exploration). I hope you like it, Kath! Well I made it to page 230.. Chapter 16 of The Terror today. I went out with a friend and to my sisters for dinner~and have now run out of energy. I am done for the day. So far the story is intriguing. It is also horrifying, although I admit that the horror to me is the days, weeks, months of ... they look like interesting reads, my friend.... I am getting into The Terror myself right now. Horror suits my frame of mind.. :P
Ape
I loved The Terror when I read it a while back. Now you must read Drood by the same author.
13. The Terror by Dan Simmons
Pages: 955
Rating: 3/5
This thing was MASSIVE, but I guess it balances things out since I've read so many short books so far this year. I posted a full review, didn't intend for it to be so huge, although I guess it's appropriate for a book of this size. ... holding my interest but I am determined to finish it.
A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb just arrived, but The Terror is sitting there looking good, as is The Entity : five centuries of secret vatican espionage . We shall see. No thread is safe. Not even if one has books mentioned. I have The Terror but haven't read it yet. After reading this thread I just bought Resolute: The Epic Search for the Northwest Passage and John Franklin, and the Discovery of the Queen's Ghost Ship and added Frozen in Time to my wish ... I'm reading Dan Simmons The Terror right now and enjoying it, thought it's less scary than I expected. I'm also anxiously awaiting Drood and Secret Story from Amazon. Should be here any day now :) 1845-1847, in a ship that has been stuck in frozen waters for over a year in The Terror. Considering the massiveness of this book, I may be frozen here for quite awhile. ... ... if we're going to count the Franklin mess as Canadian, you could check out The broken lands by Robert Edric and The Terror by Dan Simmons.

Frozen in Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition by Owen Beattie
Rating: 4/5
After reading The Terror, I found myself quite interested in the Franklin expedition and, having long found myself wanting to try out the nonfiction genre, I decided this was a perfect ... I recently read The Terror by Dan Simmons, which piqued my interest in the failed Franklin expedition, so now I'm reading Frozen in Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition by Owen Beattie and after that, I will read Ice Blink: The Tragic Fate of Sir John Franklin's Lost Polar Expedition ...
Reading The Terror by Dan Simmons and it's not scary at all so far. It's an interesting read though - I think it would appeal to people who enjoyed Moby Dick ( like myself). However it's way more modern in tone and fast paced. 'm finding that I quite like it. ... one of those kind of books I was sorry it was over when I finished it.
I finished Uhura's Song yesterday and started The Terror last night, really good so far, fitting in very neatly with what I've read about Lady Franklin and company. ... building.

The Terror sounds like a great book. Have to get to The Terror this year. Picked up a copy due to alaskabookworm's recommendation. I hae heard very few negative comments. Book #10
The Terror by Dan Simmons
Rating: 5/5
The Terror is, first and foremost, a highly entertaining read and a fascinating story (based on truth!). It tells of the voyage of Sir John Franklin and his failed attempt to find the North-West Passage.
It's also a story of survival and ... ... are very few, if any, dry spells, something I find rare in most 800 page books. Plus, Simmons is excellent at description. The Terror takes place in the Arctic and when he's describing the snow and the wind, I actually find myself shivering! Well, you've made me want to read The Terror! Also, IMO, Postmortem isn't the best, so maybe you'll like others in that series better. My personal favorite is Cruel and Unusual. Oddly, I lost interest in the series several years ago, but I have fond memories of reading some of the earlier ... ... finished it a few years back.
Look forward to more King conversations.
Also looking forward to your thoughts on The Terror since you're almost done. I just picked up a copy because of all the positive reviews, especially alaskabookworm's review. ... I've been doing this for the last ten years or so and it's not likely to change...
And now I'm off to hopefully finish The Terror because I really want to read a King book and a Cornwell book!
The Terror by Dan Simmons. I got it bargain priced at B&N and it's been in my TBR pile for about six months or so. I can't believe I waited so long to start reading it! It's an amazing, bone-chilling book and if anyone here likes the horror genre, I heartily recommend The Terror. ... light - sparkling, the captain realizes, because there is already a sheen of ice crystals on the pulped grey matter."
