Billabong Ghost is a gripping tale of love, loss, revenge, regret, adventure and hope. Author Ryn Shell brings us this story that is partly based on her own childhood. Despite my limited knowledge of Australia and the culture there, Shell was able to fill my mind with the most vivid and real surroundings. I was transported to Australia and its beautiful landscape. The language and dialogue is natural flowing and entertaining. For those words you may not be familiar with Shell provides an excellent glossary to refer to.

The plot is well executed in perfect timing alternating between the 1880s and 1940s. Charlotte and Alan are in love. Alan is too young for marriage not having reached the age of 21 yet and Charlotte does not have a dowry (which complicates things in the 1880s). In addition there is a rumor that Alan’s parents have already selected a girl for Alan to marry. Meanwhile Alan’s grandson Harry is in the 1940s discovering the past by traveling to the 1880s with who he initially believes is an imaginary friend but turns out to be Charlotte.

As the story unfolds we get the full picture of Alan’s life and what happened to Charlotte. The pain and frustration weighs heavily as the tragedy of their love and her death come into focus. Then there is how Charlotte’s death can affect Alan’s life and even the lives of his grandchildren. This multi-layered story is unique and captivating. I highly recommend it! ( )
