**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own**

This book was absolutely amazing!
The cliffhanger at the end though....you can't be doing that to a girls soul.

I love the concept of the Elementals. Even though it's a concept that had been done before, I always love a new perspective on it.

The characters were portrayed extremely well. I loved that the female characters were strong, had their own mind, and never once said anything about wanting/needing a man.
There wasn't a backbone of romance in this book. A lot of books like this tend to have the female needing a male character to help her get through whatever it is that is happening, the women in this book have got it all under control...ish. There is a small hint of romance between some of the main characters, but it doesn't overwhelm the story, which I liked.

I did feel that the beginning of the story moved a little fast. The timeline just seemed to skip forward a lot (mostly when Breena and her father are being taken to the king).

Overall, this book was great! I can't wait for the next one in the series! ( )

This is the first book in the Threats of Sky and Sea series. I got a copy from NetGalley to review. This seemed like a decent YA fantasy story when I started the book but ended up being boring and predictable.

I loved the initial setup and I was intrigued by the world and characters initially. Bree is happy with her lot in life until everything changes. However as the story continues and Breena gets to the castle things really go downhill. There's just not much that happens in the remainder of the book. The things that do happen are very predictable. I found myself struggling to pay attention and keep wishing that things would just speed up and keep moving.

I also didn't find the characters all that engaging. You do get to know Bree and she is a pretty good heroine to read about; she comes off as a bit vanilla at times but is okay. However, the side characters are really lacking in depth. I struggled to picture Princess Aleta and her character seemed really inconsistent. Prince Cadin was very bland and I didn't like him at all. There just wasn’t enough side character development.

Overall this book was decently written but just wasn't all that unique or exciting. There are so many YA fantasies out there that are better than this one, I personally wouldn't recommend. ( )

*This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com, at my request.

Bree's simple life as a tavern maid with her father is flipped inside out when Elementals come looking for a truant, and find her father. Da is a Duke that ran from his duties as adviser and high Rider of the king. Thanks to the words of Prince Caden, Bree is spared death and brought into Court life as her father is locked away for his crimes. The talisman that her father slips her before he's taken away may hold secrets to the powers of the Elementals, or Adepts as the nobility call them. The only way to see her imprisoned father is to do as the King asks, to investigate her father's last mission which he went missing from and the treasure he was to retrieve for the King.

The narrator's clear and clean in speaking, but the space feels dead around her, like the sound is eaten up around her. She feels as she's talking to me with a slight ting of a southern and relaxed country feel to her voice as Bree, the main character. At the beginning I notice it's not at a steady cadence but that there is draw in some of her words and quickness in others. She does a smoothness that fits Lady Katherine and a slight low tone for Da, more a small attitude difference but not major voice differences for characters.

This book has the solid fantasy feel to it and the world. It also has a young feel with Bree at a young age and coming into court life. The story was easy to listen to. The world was introduced at the beginning, with the Elementals or Adepts as the nobility like to call them. The special names for what each Adept can do along with a brief description slip easily into the action of the story so it's not feeling like an information drop. Then we fall into the troubles that await us, or Bree and her father. All the scenes have an importance and you can see the connections as you reflect on what's passed as we move forward.

Predictable? Yes it is. But the writing is well done and sometimes familiar is relaxing to read. The friendships created, threats made, and the revolutions made of the characters were a few things I saw coming.

This is a nice fantasy for teen readers to enjoy. A fantasy element and story with characters that relate, even when clashing in thoughts.

The story is well written and relaxing for me. I'm looking forward to continuing the series. ( )

"Threats of Sky and Sea" by Jennifer Ellision is about Breena Rose, a secretly talented, feisty and gorgeous young woman on the cusp of adulthood who is being seriously underutilized as a barmaid. She has a run-in with some unsavory folks and discovers her daddy has been hiding her away from the world these last 16 years, and now she is to return to court and learn how to be a lady, kick ass at magic, meet a handsome prince all while trying to free her father. I gotta say, the lady keeps busy!

I have to state that I had fun reading this book. It was cute like a little puppy, and I'm going to see about getting the second one on my own steam.

Breena Perdit, barmaid, has spent her entire life living in Abeline, a small town where her Da runs an inn. Her mother passed away during child birth and Bree is oblivious to the life her father lived before she was born. She has a happy simple life, but soon a small group of Elementals in the service of the king show up at her door, arresting her father who turns out to be a traitor to the crown, a point he's never shared with his daughter. Together, Bree and her father are taken to the capital of Egria to await their punishment. Her father's thrown into the dungeon and Bree must become the lady Breena, Duchess of Secan.

Bree’s entire life, it seems is a lie and the only person that can give her answers is in prison. Bree is actually nobility and her father's one of the most infamous Elementals to ever live in Egria. He was a close friend and confidant of the King until he disappeared 16 years ago, after going on an extremely important mission where he learned secrets the king would do anything to learn. To try and save her father’s life, Bree agrees to give the king the information he seeks, but her father isn’t willing to share any of his secrets, even with Bree. Things start to spiral out of control and the king is not a patient man.
I loved Bree who's is a strong and loveable character. She's smart, spunky, independent and funny. I connected with her at once. She was alone, a prisoner in the palace without any friends, just jailors and yet she deals with it all, head on. Instead of giving up, she just continues to move forward. I loved this girl. I guess I have always liked strong heroines like Bree and I can’t wait to continue her story!
Caden, who Bree meets in her prison cell when she arrives, is intelligent, charming, cunning, and kind. (unlike his father, who he still surprisingly loves). He truly cares about the people in his kingdom and he does what he can to protect them. His romance with Bree is slow in developing, but they're absolutely perfect for each other. I'll be interested to see how their relationship grows since it's obvious they both have strong feelings for one another. I was right to read Threats of Sky and Sea, a high fantasy book filled with great action, subtle romance, and wonderful characters. I loved Jennifer Ellision's cast of characters and her fast paced story line. They all added their own personal twist to the story and I developed a connection with all of them. There was very little romance in the story, but it set things up perfectly for the future books. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
