A through study of the role of progressive Friends during the nineteenth century, moving forward racial and gender concerns. In the process, the future path of larger Friends society was also moved forward. The author is a much published social gadfly and progressive Friend. ( )

Progressive Friends shaped much of the liberal branch of Quakerism in the 19th and 20th centuries. This is their history.
