A bit on the long side, in my opinion, and slow to get started. The action picks up about 1/3 of the way in, though. ( )

This story was so VERY CURIOUS and yet so much fun (if you can call running for your life, trying to save your family, and facing your worst fears fun, that is). I was curious about the "powerful witch" he kept focusing on, and while there were a lot of similarities between her and you-know-who, I couldn't believe it was one in the same. Was it? Oh, well...I can't spoil THAT for you. Also, Charlie's "darkness" was something both otherworldly and of this world, a conundrum I did not expect, but appreciated. Who knew nightmares could have a purpose other than torture or scaring you half to death! Definitely a fun concept, and I can't wait to check out more of the series. My only catch point, the rather abrupt ending and the use of "stepmonster" after all that transpired. ( )

Charlie Laird has a stepmom, and he is certain she’s is a witch. The family have moved to her purple mansion. It’s creepy and he finds he can’t sleep at night. Strange noises such as heavy footsteps, doors opening and creaking, a feeling someone or something is there. His brother thinks it is haunted, but Charlie doesn’t believe in ghosts. He does have some serious nightmares, though, and he has seen a glowing light in the tower of the house at times.

Charlie’s lack of sleep seems to be affecting his daytime world. Changes in personnel at school are strange. The principal seems to always be on his case. Charlie’s school work is below par and so are his grades. It’s his stepmom he blames. He just knows she is a witch!

When Charlie’s brother goes missing, Charlie finds himself in the Netherworld — the land of nightmares. It takes all Charlie’s determination and bravery to navigate Netherland to save his brother. Along the way, Charlie meets some very unusual beings, learns a lot about nightmares and about himself.

An entertaining read of adventure and bravery. I also got a kick out of the characters in Netherland. It is also a lesson in conquering your fears by learning what it is that is making you fearful. ( )
