Gotta mention Volcano Cowboys again. Very interesting. I liked Krakatoa and The Map That Changed the World, but Simon Winchester does sometimes (frequently?) drag out the story, seemingly to add pages.
Of course, if you only ever read one ... ... and the Madman and though it was wonderful. I've tried a couple of his others but couldn't get into them. I own The Map that Changed the World--an impulse buy in the London airport that I've never gotten around to. It sounds like this will be another one I'll be putting off.
