Earlier this year I was on a Roald Dahl journey. I so agree with your comments regarding the BFG. Of all that I read, this one stands as my favorite. I loved the play on words, especially the phrase "right or left" meaning right or wrong!
I remember reading The BFG to my son and enjoying it as much as he did. The video was delightful too. ... by Quentin Blake. Recommended for the young and the young at heart-- 3 ½ stars

I listened to the audiobook of The BFG earlier this year - Natasha Richardson was the narrator. So, I still have her voice in my head when I remember the BFG saying, "Right? Or left?" Glad you enjoyed it! I'm so glad you liked The BFG. Wasn't it simply delightful? Didn't it make you smile? Didn't it tear at your heart string? She particularly loves the BFG. Personally, I've always thought James and the Giant Peach is Dahl's masterpiece. I hope you enjoy The BFG. I read this to my youngest son many years ago and we both loved it. The animated film version is very good too. ... he is old enough to read it on his own if he would still enjoy it. I will gladly fourth the discussion re: HP and Diana Wynne Jones. I enjoyed the Harry Potter books, ... I finished Roal Dahl's Revolting Rhymes and now I'm reading The BFG ... reviews of yours I've been reading have been simmering and I'm ready to try reading him. Yesterday I found a used copy of The BFG at the used book sale and today I rummaged through the boxes I pack last summer to make room on my shelves--these were the books I thought I could do without for as ... ... at the time, I have a suspicion though, that they probably won't quite live up to my memories... Maybe I'll re-read The BFG instead... although I'm not sure how it'll be without being in bed with my sister and my Dad putting on all the voices of the different giants for us ;) digifish...
I'm currently reading Boy and I was able to obtain a copy of The BFG from my local library. I hope to read all of Dahl's books in the next few months.

I really really hope you enjoy The BFG, its by far my favourite Roald Dahl and I think everyone should read it and love it! IMO, I didn't like the Charlie books and James and the Giant Peach nearly as much as I liked some of his others. The BFG remains my favourite though. ... to make things move with my mind after reading it... lol. A few of my other favorites by Roald Dahl are The Witches, The BFG, and James and the Giant Peach. ... and George's Marvelous Medicine which are for slightly younger than Matilda so might be a good intro for her. His children's poetry is also great: Revolting Rhymes, Dirty Beasts and Rhyme Stew. And when you'd have your fill ... ... my son. We like it, but not as well as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which is one of my favorites. We haven't read The BFG or Matilda yet. We'll have to try those next. ... factory was. Seemed slower and less exciting than most of the other Dahl books we've read together, but it does have a lot of fun made-up words, such as ... ... everyone else in the spoiler thread.
Also listening to All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot and reading The BFG with my son. Both are wonderful :o) ... and the Chocolate Factory in particular is neither long nor terribly complex (though Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Twits, and The BFG are better introductions to Dahl). There are some fantastic suggestions for gentle read-alouds at Ambleside Online.

My favorite picture book is The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch (I love all of this guy's stories).

As to the original topic of discussion in this thread: I picture a group of mountain trolls, perhaps like in The BFG, bopping each other on the head, in turn, saying "MY fangs are bigger than yours!" "well, MY fangs are sharper than yours!" "yeah? well, MY mum is uglier than ... ... but I think some kids will find it too freaky. She still really likes to reread all the Roald Dahl books, especially the BFG.
In her class this year they read Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson and Underground to Canada, by Barbara Smucker (about the underground ... ... However, I know any number of older children that wouldn't be able to handle that imagery. I know a 10 yo who can't read The BFG because the imagery is too intense, no matter how comically exaggerated.
She very clearly sees that fairy and folktales and myths are are "just stories." However, ... ... Woods, the first 'Magic Treehouse: Dinosuars Before Dark', A Wrinkle in Time, Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing and The BFG. But nuts, I put back Tiger Rising. I'll have to get it next time. And The Edge Chronicles sound interesting too. Thanks redthaws and Osbadistone! ... when we got to Farmer Boy--too boyish!
