Not up to the level of some of Michener's finer efforts. ( )

Good read. Very different than what you'd normally think of in a Michener book. This is a story that takes place just at one period in time. Its about a young American diplomat in Kabul Afghanistan in 1946. Prophetic read on the situation in Afghanist ( )

The scene is Afghanistn in 1946. There were times I identified with Ellen, the American girl that left a small “proper” town to marry an Afghan, and later to live with a nomadic tribe. I liked the thoughts expressed from viewpoints of American-educated Afghans, Americans in Afghanistan, highly intelligent/political leader of a nomadic caravan, and more typical Afghans. A variety of political, social, and spiritual views. Also a German doctor exciled due to persecution of Jews…war crimes, including his later relationship with a Jew and the Jew to him. GREAT BOOK! Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0812969820, Paperback)

In this romantic adventure of wild Afghanistan, master storyteller James Michener mixes the allure of the past with the dangers of today. After an impetuous American girl, Ellen Jasper, marries a young Afghan engineer, her parents hear no word from her. Although she wants freedom to do as she wishes, not even she is sure what that means. In the meantime, she is as good as lost in that wild land, perhaps forever....
"An extraordinary novel....Brilliant."
