The 'modern' in the title of this book is a little misleading as it really doesn't have much to say about anything later than the mid-1900s. Nonetheless, it is an enjoyable book, written in a scholarly style with numerous photos of lovely kimono and of advertising items used to sell kimono.

The author has interesting thoughts about the interplay between how kimono have been worn and what the social signals the wearing of kimono communicated during various periods of Japan's history.

Worth owning, both for the illustrations and the text. ( )
