It's easy to see why this collection of poems was shortlisted for the National Book Award. This Howe at her lyrical, surreal, haunting best. Her poems tend to be propositional, bordering on aphoristic. Sometimes they read like conventional lyrics, though usually with startling insights. Other times they work by juxtaposing seemingly unrelated thoughts or observations and accreting meaning in surprising ways. Wonderful poems here. ( )
