Excellent book that kept me riveted from beginning to end. It starts out with Rourke fascinated by a cold case he has been working on. With a closer look he sees a connection to two other cases, but no one else believes there's anything to it. So Rourke takes a couple weeks vacation and pursues his suspicions on his own.

Rourke has never had any trouble trusting his instincts, and those are telling him there's more to Callie Westfield than he first suspected. His initial thought had been that she was somehow involved in the murders, but once he met her he had his doubts. There's something about her that tells him she isn't capable of those gruesome murders, but he also senses that she has secrets that put her in danger. I loved seeing the battle that Rourke fought with himself. His brain was telling him that Callie had motive and opportunity, but his heart says that she is a victim also. He feels guilty for lying to her about who he is, but he also needs to be sure that she isn't the serial killer herself.

Callie hasn't stayed in one place for very long, but Beartooth has given her a sense of security she hasn't felt in years. For the first time in two years she hasn't suffered from the headaches that were the precursors to visions of murder, and she hopes that they are gone for good. Then a good looking cowboy comes to town and the trouble starts up again. Somehow she knows that he is connected in some way. She's suspicious of him because she can't read him the way she does others, but she's also attracted to him. When she starts seeing more murders Callie has to decide if she can trust him with her secrets.

This book was filled with twists and turns. Rourke notices Callie in three crime scene pictures and goes to his former partner for help in finding out who she is. He discovers that Laura has a connection to one of the cases. She is initially reluctant to help Rourke, but once she does she has a lot to say. As a criminal profiler she has a theory and works hard to convince Rourke that she's right. I have to say that I didn't like Laura from the very beginning. She is in love with Rourke, thought he's never had those feelings for her. I thought she was far too focused on Callie being the killer and didn't leave any room for the idea of it being someone else. The more information that came to light about Callie, the stranger things get. I did figure out who it was, but there were enough twists that I wasn't sure of the exact details. It ended up being even creepier than I expected. ( )

Contemporary, Romantic Suspense

Seattle, Washington & Beartooth, Montana

Rourke Kincaid is a U.S. Marshal and for him there is the law and then there is his law. If they don’t always agree he goes with the one thing he can trust…his instincts. In the Northwest there has been a strange killing spree going on with a connection only Rourke can see. Now the old rules of justice no longer apply. He has been forced to turn rogue to find the answers. Going undercover to track a mysterious woman suspect he ends up in a quiet, unassuming café located in the wild, isolated mountains of Beartooth.

When he encounters Callie Westfield his mission gets complicated in ways he didn’t expect. She gets to Rourke with her fragile beauty and sexy charm even though she seems very suspicious. Now the gory crimes have begun again. His heart is suddenly at war with his instincts, which leaves him with only two options. He has to turn Callie over to the law or he will have to put everything on the line, both his heart and his badge if he wants to protect her.

This is a great romantic suspense that keeps readers guessing until the very end. With the twists and turns this story takes readers are never sure just what will happen next or where the threats are coming from. While this is part of a series and would be better read as a whole the story can be read as a standalone book. For readers that start with this one they will definitely want to check out the other books in the series just to get more from this author. This is one suspense that is hard to put down though with all that happens in it the story will definitely have readers thinking twice about turning out the lights at night. ( )

I like the Beartooth Montana series, but the one story line that runs through the series always leave me wanting answers. The new story was good. I guessed a little bit of the twists but not all. I like Rourke and Callie and wanted things to work out for them. Lots of suspense, crazy stuff going on, action and romance.

U.S. Marshal Rourke Kincaid was on two week suspension to think about his job. He came to his ex-partner Laura to get her opinion.
When he is on a case he does not give up. He is all business. He is single.

Callie Westfield has major secrets in her life. She is a waitress in Beartooth Montana. She does not date or tell anyone her background.

Laura used to be a homicide detective in Seattle. Rourke was her partner. She misses being a cop. Laura can see that Rourke is drawn to Callie's picture. She is worried that Rourke could be throwing his career away by not giving up the cold case. She is working as a profiler for now. She loves Rourke but he has no idea.

Rourke found in a case file Callie's picture at three different crime scene pictures. He believes she is the key to a serial killer. He hires a P.I. to find out about her and locate her. He found her in Beartooth, Montana.

Rourke has just got to town and is already recognized by the Sheriff. He tells him he is working on his own. Rourke is attracted to Callie.

There is lots of secrets in the story and we find out most of the answers but still want to know the rest of the answers.

I was given this ebook to read and in return I agreed to give it a honest review of it. ( )

This is the fifth book in the Beartooth, Montana series. Each book can be read as a stand alone novel. So you can jump into this series now with Mercy or read then all starting with Unforgiven. This book had the right amount of romance and mystery. My issues were that Callie did not connect with me right away like Rourke did. Also, the story seemed to drag because it seemed like while nothing was literally repeated, it did seem to repeat itself. When it came to the mystery. For someone as smart as Rourke who has been doing his job for a long time, I thought he would have figured out the truth sooner. The reason that I did not connect with Callie right away is because she was timid. I wanted her to be more outgoing. Although she did make up for it later in the book. The romance between Callie and Rourke was steamy but like a PG to PG-13 type of rating. A good quick read. ( )
