Leaving him was Impossible...
It took everything she had for FBI Special Agent Danica Beckett to walk away from the man she loved. But if she wants to save his life, she has to keep her distance. Now, with a killer on the loose and the stakes higher than ever before, the Department of Covert Ops is forcing these former lovers into an uneasy alliance...whether they like it or not.

Seeing her again is even worse
The last thing Clayne Buchanan wants is to be shackled to the woman who broke his heart. She gets under his skin in a way no one ever has and makes him want things he has no right to anymore. All he has to do is suffer through this case and he can be free of her for good. But when Clayne finds out why Danica left in the first place, everything he's tried to bury comes roaring back-and there's no way this wolf shifter is going to let her get away this time.

This series bothers me. The world building around the romance and nature of shifters is just iffy. The romance is so juvenile for all there are actual sex scenes. I have so many issues with the romance aspect of this series. Everyone has a crush on someone else. It's just not very romantic to see them all hung up one another only for that person to get with someone else and then they choose someone else - it's too much like they're settling and that bothers me. For instance, Clayne is hung up on Danica but she leaves him so he decides to settle on Ivy, who ends up hung up on Landon and so he bothers Landon. Even though Clayne isn't supposed to even really want Ivy. It makes it hard to believe in the romance of a relationship when it's so lacklustre.

Are there soulmates? It's consistently referred to and then it just fizzles. Danica and Clayne can sense each other? How? Why can't Ivy and Landon? Has Clayne biting her actually marked her and changed her DNA? Clayne was able to sense her from day one so did he mark her prior to their breakup? Except she says he's never left a mark so what the hell? I find it very frustrating that such an obvious plot hole is not addressed. I like my world building to make sense. And Danica and Clayne sensing each other when shifters are supposedly genetic mutations does not make sense.

The drama between Danica and Clayne was okay. It made sense but it was pretty thin reasoning - although shouldn't a covert agent be better at reacting? She just caved to the blackmail? Surely a spy can think of something better to remedy the situation?

Kendra baffles me. I have no idea why she even likes Clayne. He barely speaks to her and usually it's not all that civil. And why on earth would you think a guy that barely acknowledges your existence would then hit it off in bed?

Ivy and Landon getting married makes no sense. How could they possibly manage to legally get married without it being flagged? It just seems ridiculous that it would be possible to hide something like that when they actually had a wedding that their coworkers attended? And how the hell does Layla (Ivy's sister) know what Ivy does? I thought it was supposed to be a huge secret and they're only supposed to know she's Homeland? Do they have permission to tell other shifters? It's just very unclear with the details. Plus since when was she a full character? She shows up and all of a sudden she's supposedly with Jayson? When did all this happen? I mean showing is great but sometimes tell can be just as important to things like my sanity.

This book was hard to read because I hate Clayne. I hated him in the first one. He was such an absolute jerk and I have no idea why Ivy and/or Kendra defended him as a decent bloke when he was just an ass. He's not as bad in this book but I already hated him and it's hard to go back from that. Danica annoyed me. She was badass but all her whinging about how hard it has been and guilt over what she did was boring. She made a stupid choice. (Caving to the blackmail.) Get over it. I don't need to keep hearing about it. And they discuss her choice for like two seconds without any real arguments and then just start calling each other babe and honey.

Adam was mentioned in this - not that I get how it fits in but it's nice that the storyline from the prequel hasn't been discarded and ignored.

The mystery was enjoyable and I didn't see the twist coming. The murderer has an identical twin brother! But the world building is iffy. This would be stronger if the paranormal abilities were fleshed out further and the plot and writing was tightened. 2 stars. ( )

Her Lone Wolf wasn't quite as good as the previous story in the X-Ops series, Her Perfect Mate. This story was much slower, spending lots of time with the main characters tracking a serial killer and lots of time avoiding their feelings for one another. Near the end, the story branched off into three almost totally unrelated problems that made it hard to maintain the original story line. Overall, however, this was still a very good story and made for an interesting read. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. ( )

I love how the paranormal aspect of this series just seamlessly blends into what could easily be just a straight romantic suspense. Yes half the characters are shifters and there are evil doctors trying to make hybrids but they way both worlds are blended together works perfectly.

Clayne Buchanan was a big grouch in the first book and not very likable. In this book we find out why. Between something he did in his past that the evil Dick has been holding over his head and losing both his partner and lover 2 years ago when she walked away from him and the DCO, his already rough demeanor got rougher. He is not exactly thrilled when he is sent to California to help track down a serial killer who so happens to be a hybrid and finds out one of the lead FBI agents on the case is none other than his ex-partner/lover.

Danica never wanted to walk away from Clayne two years ago but she had no choice. Now being so close to him again she realizes that her feelings haven’t changed but she puts those feelings aside for the case so they can stop the killer.

I thought Clayne and Danica had great chemistry from the start – even before they started their affair up again the way they knew each other as partners was still just as strong as it was in the past and they work great as a team in catching the killer.

The ongoing story arc was still going strong. Landon and Ivy are still trying to find the doctors/scientist who are out there creating hybrids from Ivy’s DNA. There is a bit a surprise/revelation on this at the end of the book that as a reader just has you wanting to get the next book to see what’s going to happen next.

Working in California on a new case, the heroine soon realizes that the killer they're after isn't human. Knowing there's no way the FBI will be able to catch such a predator she reluctantly calls her old boss who captains the secret organization of soldiers who deal with Shifter crimes. But she never imagined he would send her once lover to investigate the case. The hero is very antisocial. Raised on the streets and growing up in a life of crime, he's short tempered. Quick to react with violence rather than rational problem solving. But he's never forgotten his old parent and secret lover whom always kept him grounded and reasonable. Still the soul wrenching pain at the memory of her leaving him after harsh words resonates inside and though he wants to hate her, to forget her, he's never stopped loving her. But he never imagined to see her again, let alone being forced to work side by side with her and her new partner. Surprised as they are to see each other once again, they both are able to deal with one another while hunting down the serial killer despite painful memories surfacing. The heroine knows him like no other and is quick to defend him to her colleagues and trust his instincts when he catches a lead. The hero, though bitter over their break up, realizes just how lucky he is to have such a capable woman by his side. However, soon the case becomes personal especially when the killer develops a fascination with the hero and guilt ways heavily on him as bodies pile up and he's no closer to stopping it. That's when, over a bottle of whisky, the heroine breaks down. She admits that leaving him two years ago nearly destroyed her but she did to because she was begin black mailed. She was told that the hero would go to jail if she didn't cut ties with him and leave the state, so she did. From that point on, the hero and heroine were inseparable. The love between them, dormant but never forgotten was rekindled into an inferno and all the feelings came rushing back. Together, knowing they have each other, they are willing to take on the world. The killer, the blackmailer, everything pales in comparison to what they feel for each other. I really enjoyed this book for the simple fact that the main charactrs didn't immediately fall ino bed with each other. Instead, they tried their very best to ignore one another for the first half of the book. Repressing old emotions and hanging on to bitter feelings until in just one moment it all came crashing down. I loved the fact that the hero forgave her instantly as soon she she entrusted him with her reason for leaving. She was the only person to ever know him, the only one he ever allowed close enough to hurt him. And when she left, it nearly destroyed him. But he never hesitated for a millisecond to take her back. I adored him for that. It was a nicely paced book, lots of action and mystery. Serial killers interest me and I like a good murder mystery and this book did that genre proud at the same time being a great paranormal romance. This author is definatly one to watch. ( )
