When Claire Malloy is called for jury duty, she doesn’t mind being excluded from the jury … after all, her husband Peter Rosen is a cop. But when the local prosecutor insults her while questioning her, she is pissed off and wants to get even. So, she decides to do a little snooping to find evidence that defendant Sarah Swift, who’s accused of killing her husband, is not guilty. Sarah’s defense attorney needs all the help he can get, so he agrees. Trouble is, everything Claire uncovers seems to point to Sarah as the killer.

To top it off, Peter’s mother is coming for a visit and Claire is terrified of her … not that she’s met her mother-in-law before. Just the idea of being put under the microscope brings into play all of Claire’s insecurities.

The Claire Malloy mysteries are played strictly for laughs, relying on crazy characters and witty dialogue for their appeal. Pride v. Prejudice is especially good because the role of Claire’s obnoxious-and-getting-more-so-by-the-minute daughter Caron plays only a minor role. For lighthearted fun, no one does mysteries like Joan Hess. ( )
