This is the second novel in the author's The Daughters of Hastings trilogy, and follows the life of Edith Swanneck's daughter Gunnhild, and her elopement from Wilton Abbey and life with Alan the Red of Britanny. The book is well researched and follows a theory supported by some historians about how their lives interconnected. The author's note at the end explained this very usefully - prior to reading this, I admit I had thought that much of the plot was romantic invention. The story is engagingly told and well written, though fewer set piece events happen than in The Handfasted Wife. I look forward to the final book in the trilogy that concerns another of Edith Swanneck's other daughter who married a Russian prince. ( )
