Liked the first section, but nothing much held my attention in the second. Meh. ( )

i think this is my favourite volume of The Best American a Nonrequired Reading series. Each book is a widely varied collection of short stories, journalism, essays, poetry, lists (eg. "Best American Commune Names") and comics. Depending on the editor and on the year the balance of content and general tone varies: 2014 is edited by Daniel Handler and has a lot of poetry and is quite dark; 2011 & this volume are edited by Dave Eggers and are, to me, the perfect balance of content and light & dark.

This book is jam-packed with brilliant short stories by authors previously unknown to me - reading it was a bit like Christmas!

Highly recommended! ( )
