This group of stories are more horror than mystery ( )
  earthwind | Nov 11, 2017 |
This year's Best American Mystery Stories includes some mysteries, but in general, these are more crime stories than mystery stories, and several of them focus primarily on the effects of crime on the family members of the victims or the perpetrators. Overall, the collection is pretty dark, which is probably why I only enjoyed it moderately - folks who like dark stories may love this. I did very much like James Lee Burke, 'Going Across Jordan', which uses slang to great effect; Charlaine Harris, 'Small Kingdoms', with its offbeat backstory and loopy plot; and Daniel Alarcon, 'Collectors', an unsentimental story of despair, love, and prison brutality.
