Gives children the understanding that we are made of traditions, memories, and families--that's where we come from, not just a place. ( )Momma, Where are You From? by Marie Bradby is a book about an African-American girl who wants to know about their history. Her grandmother gives a rich description of her past. Her description includes wood stoves and wood baskets, all things no longer used today. The pictures in this book are very vivid and beautiful. This book is an excellent choice for comparing past to present. I found this book to my liking. The pictures were beautiful and bright, and the comparisons made were very interesting. I would use this book in my classroom to teach not only multiculturalism, but history in general. I could have the students ‘give up’ modern supplies for a day and have them use things that would have been used during their grandmother’s time. I could also have them ask their parents or grandparents about their past, and have them write a journal of at least three to five differences between the lives of their parents growing up and their own.
