Warriors at the Helm is a solid guide for those who want to excel in business and to grow in their own knowledge and leadership ability. The book describes experiences of the author and his opinions about the types of personalities that are challenges to succeeding in business. The book is full of well thought out quotes and motivation ideas for people in business. I think it is best suited for lower-mid level people in their career who are looking for a new perspective and for advice on avoiding some common pitfalls in advancing. The main challenging personality types include "egomaniacs" and "dumb asses" and while the latter may be funny (and many of us may call others that in our heads from time to time) it is not a productive (or professional) way to consider others. Overall the book has some helpful tips and it is clear that the author has been in the business field for sometime. I didn't find the work ground breaking, but it is a quick read and will probably be helpful to those who are struggling with finding meaning and excelling in their career path. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. Like most management/leadership books, they need to be taken in small chunks and often time read a few years apart. Are you a Ego Maniac, a Dumb Ass, or a Warrior. Marcos introduces what it takes to be a warrior (leader) and stay away from being a barbarian. How to communicate and listen to your employees. What it takes to be a Leader and how to avoid being the other two and how to deal with them. Enjoyable book with plenty of good information, but it needed to be a bit more cohesive for me. Sometime I felt like I was reading ideas that were just jotted down and not put together. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This book presents decent enough advice for the supervisor or middle manager, but drowns it in the terrible "warrior" metaphor for competent leadership/teamwork. From reading the title I had erringly anticipated how the author's military experience applied to business leadership or development. That is not this book. Sadly, the title derives from a cadged separation of leaders/managers/supervisors into the author's two archetypes: "Warriors" and "Barbarians" (watch out, Jung and Nietzsche, here comes Marcos!). Warriors are defined by good traits, while Barbarians are further divided into the two types, "Dumb-Asses" and "Egomaniacs", with correspondingly vague but not entirely inaccurate "bad" traits and characteristics. The author presents no strikingly new ideas or perspectives, but it has enough good advice to warrant reading if you respond to testosterone-charged labels or haven't met a business book you disliked. no reviews | add a review
Whether you're just getting started in business, or you're a thirty-year
warrior, nothing is as valuable to your growth and success as
learning through trial and error. However, modern-day Corporate
America can be very impatient and unforgiving through your
learning process.
This book represents the next best thing to trial and error: learning from others'
experience. Here you will find a practical tool that offers unique insights into the
real differences between effective leaders and those who are barriers to your progress
versus being a catalyst.
In Warriors at the Helm, Juan Carlos Marcos shares his almost four decades of experience
regarding people dynamics in the corporate world and gives you a glimpse
in the minds of veteran executives who share with you personal experiences and
perspectives derived from years of trench warfare. This book will provide you with
the awareness and knowledge of life "on the inside" helping you to emulate and
demonstrate the behaviors that will keep your career on a positive and productive
track. (From the Foreword to Warriors at the Helm) No library descriptions found. |

At the end of the day as he so aptly states, “Capitalism does not reward effort, it rewards results.”
I would recommend this book to peers. It creates reflection and action items based on the outcome of your reflection. But much like all leadership books, you have to be honest about your own style before you can truly begin to improve. ( )
