I am a fan of “Starting First Grade”. A few reasons for this are the plot, the illustrations and the characters. The plot of this story starts off with the children in their classroom discussing the upcoming play and then it proceed to go on with the few issues that the children have throughout the classroom and the paly. For example one of the characters named Jim goes through the issue of not wanting to be a tree but to be the troll. He begins to get upset and then they find him a different part in the play. While on the other hand the character named Paul is the troll but on the night of the play he develops stage fright. While he encounters his stage fright Jim helps him get over it. The character development throughout this book is fantastic. For the character of Jim goes through the ups and downs of not getting what he wants and then still coming out with something good. While with the character of Paul he gets angry with Jim for telling him what to do. The development of these characters allow for the reader to understand that there is depth to each of the characters. Lastly the illustrations of the book completely enhance the story and they fit perfectly within the story line. For with each blurb there is a matching picture. For instance when they talk about all of the students being ready for the play their illustration is of them on stage in their places. The main message of this book is when you put your mind to something and work hard at it; something good will come out of it. ( )
