Funny, I have Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies on my TBR bookshelf. I bought it because he's an Asian American author I admire, so I'm pleased to hear that you loved it (and that it's a non-Asian theme). I'll move it up closer to the top of the pile. I completely agree that the novel allows for ...

You asked for historical novels that had an impact on us. I finished Welsh Girl a few weeks ago and loved it. It is set in Wales immediately after the D-Day landings and is about a prisoner of war camp. Setting it in Wales allowed the author to explore the underlying feelings of the locals ...

... lesson to my American history students, sometimes quoting from that very book. #70 -- benitasmad: I, too, admired The Welsh Girl (I had the same problem with it that you did -- the Rotheram-Hess storyline felt tacked on, never really part of the whole) and I like what you have to say ...

Like somebody else on this list I stayed up last night to finish a book. It was The Welsh Girl. Unlike her, I didn't stay up until 6 a.m. I only stayed up till 1 a.m. I noticed that the LT reviews of this book weren't all that good, but I liked it. It does have some structural problems (I ...

I'm in the throes of trying to decide what to read next. I have a good start on The Welsh Girl and have The Night Watch and Book of Unholy Mischief close at hand. #180 Booksloth Let me know what you think of Book of Unholy Mischief I have that one on my TBR pile and am trying to ...

I finished Great and Terrible Beauty and started on The Welsh Girl. Great and Terrible Beauty was really good. There are many people who think that YA novels aren't as meaty and full bodied as adult novels, but this one was an exception. It was very well written with lots of food for ...

I recently read and enjoyed The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies. It's set at a POW camp for German soldiers in rural Wales at the very end of WWII. There are a lot of threads to the story and layers of complexity- the interactions between military and non-military, Welsh and English, English ...

... by Leon Uris. Of course setting next to it on the shelf was Armageddon also by Uris. A few shelves over was the Welsh Girl. I couldn't pass that one up as it has had some really good buzz about it on LT and other places. In the end I went into the library for 2 books and came out ...

I really thought The Welsh Girl deserved more attention than it received. Great read.

... acquisition. From PBS- Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd -I have Swift Pure Cry by Dowd, as well, but haven't read it yet. The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies, LT and fellow-blogger inspired :-D

... of the 1001 list, and Mister Pip which should make it onto everyones must read list, in my humble opinion ;-) The Welsh Girl was also an original story that I'd recommend. Interesting enough none of these were the winner ;-)

... indeed! I picked up this book a few months back, and it is slowly climbing Mount TBR. As are Child 44, Killing Rommel, The Welsh Girl, The Burning Blue, and so so so so many more; but like yourself, my mind also craves nonfiction - so much so that I find it very difficult to make much of ...

Ooh - might have to look for this one. I read The Welsh Girl and enjoyed it but was disappointed at the same time. I can't remember exactly what it was about the story. I think it was the Hess stuff. Something didn't hang together. I just had a look now and I gave it 4 stars, but I think I' ...

... but I'm not sure. And we'll never know. Nevertheless: The Dig, while perhaps similar in atmosphere and tone to The Welsh Girl or Atonement, is actually far superior to both, in my opinion, and I enjoyed it immensely. ... rather guilty about that. Now, if been rather busy with family/social events, but still have another 100 pages of The Welsh girl to go. I admire the shared readings with your children too TQD and Freelunch. We had a rousing read-a-long of Dear zoo yesterday - but I think the ...

Greetings everyone, I am still reading The Welsh girl by Peter Ho Davies and enjoying it. It does make me want to go off and research Hess though, and how his life ended (I am not sure what is fact and what is fiction about Hess in this book). All this talk of McEwan is tempting me to ...

Thanks LWT. You've saved me c.AUD$25 with your review of The Welsh Girl.

62.) The Welsh Girl, Peter Ho Davies *** I know LW3 has just reviewed this (I recommended it to her when I was halfway through and then she went and finished before I did!), but I've not yet read what she's said about it. The Welsh Girl ought to be better than it is. The concept ...

63. The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies This story is all about the big issues of courage, loyalty, honor, freedom, identity-- and the Welsh hills in World War II are a perfect setting for exploring them. Not only is the enigmatic Rudolph Hess being held in isolation somewhere out there ...

I just read Peter Ho Davies' The Welsh Girl and am finding myself wanting to read more by him. It's his only novel, though, and I'm not generally as fond of the short story.

#90 Karenmarie - great haul of books! #93 shootingstarr - I read The Welsh Girl last year and really enjoyed it. It was beautifully written, and the plot was interesting, but I'm sitting here a yeaer later and I can't remember what happened... It's very, very English (or Welsh...). #110 ...

I had a *ton* of time to kill today, and wandered into Borders. I came home with The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies (longlisted for the Booker last year), and, from the bargain shelves, a hardcover copy of The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. It's funny, because I'd decided on the trade ...

... last nite--I got Ask Again Later, Christine Falls, and while I was trying to walk out the door I saw and had to buy The Welsh Girl. Now they called me that my pre order of Firefly Lane is in--man I need more money.

5. The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies - The premise of this book made me think of "Summer of My German Soldier" for adults. This was a very lovely, well-written novel that I enjoyed. But I don't think I was quite as blown away as other reviewers. I liked the overall theme of conflicting ...

Icelander was great fun and made me smile with many, many references to some of my favorite things. The Welsh Girl was beautiful and I thought very satisfying as well. Jamestown would probably have been a stand-out in another month, I enjoyed that one too.

24. The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies I couldn't put this down - it was great, the writing gorgeous. So sad this didn't make it as far as the Booker shortlist.

Cariola in The Prizes : The Booker (Sep 6, 2007, 5:42pm)

I'm surprised not to see The Welsh Girl on the short list--it has gotten so much hype. (McEwan--YES!!!)

... a young girl, which would be much higher on my list were it not for the very very poor and superfluous final 40 pages. 4. The Welsh Girl – I can't really remember anything about this book, which I think is a reflection of its mediocrity rather than my failing memory… 5. The Reluctant Fund ...

#78 I'm in the US, and only a few of the Booker long listed books are available here. The Welsh Girl has been out here for several months; Mister Pip, Consolation, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist are, too. That said, I was in Border's today and couldn't find them, although they are ...

I've just finished The Welsh Girl and I think it's a fine book - certainly the best of the measly three I've read so far, but that's not saying much, I know... I'm just wondering if it might be a good idea for us to discuss the long-listed books we've already read in more detail? Then again, I ...
