Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0252001036, Hardcover)

Written for a theater existing in the reader's mind, Mr Jerome's inventive modern verse drama asks the reader to be imaginative also - to accept new modes of perception. A sequence of autobiographical essays is interwoven with the author's four verse plays, exploring the reality from which the plays emerge. They concern his family life, his theatrical experience, his religious experience, and his encounter with university sophistication. The plays themselves are strong in language and imagination and essentially theatrical in the way good verse drama must be. Candle in the Straw is a full-length tragedy based on the career of James Naylor, a seventeenth-century Quaker preacher. Winter in Eden is a musical comedy based upon Genesis and Paradise Lost. A naive young man's reactions to the overly sophisticated parents of his fiancee are the basis of Drums, a drawing-room comedy. The Glass Mountain is a comic one-act play based on the fairy tale of the same name.
