I listened to the original MP, not this particular book. I had never read MP, though I had seen the movie based on her interaction with Walt D. It was interesting to listen to the book with the context of the movie in the background. ( )

Summary: Jane and Micheal are apart of the wealthy Banks family, they are surprised when they are faced with a new nanny the Magical Mary Poppins. She takes them on many wonderful adventures and teaches them manners. Also she would like for Micheal and Jane to pass their new attitudes and manners to their parents.

Personal Reaction: This is another great movie and book to read, the kids I read it to really seemed to enjoy as much as I did when I was a kid.

Classroom Extension:
1. Have the kids dress up as Mary Poppins for a day of class.
2. Have the kids do a coloring page of the places Mary took the kids on their adventures.
3. Let the kids dress up like Bert.

I first discovered the Mary Poppins books when I was a child in the 1950's. I was enchanted, and read them side b side with the collected stories of Edgar Allen Poe--a weird combination if there ever was one. Neither of y children was ever interested so it has been many decades since I read them and what a treat it was. It was clear, however, that the first book contained all the cream and that the subsequent books were, sweet as they were, simply a re-hashing of the same ideas with minor cosmetic changes. Every parent needs to read these storiies and, if possible, to a child. ( )

I have always had a fondness for classic children's literature, and Mary Poppins is one of my favorite characters. I love how much more acerbic she is in the books than in the simperingly sweet movie, though I will admit that I like the movie as well.

Still, I find her character int he books to be so rich and entertaining, and they have so many fun adventures. I read this books whenever I need comforting. ( )
