In my opinion, based on what I have read so far, there is no one to beat the Scandinavian writers in the game of psychological thrillers. And, true to this tradition, Lars Kepler has delivered a gripping thriller that had me hooked from the beginning till the very end. Stalker has a host of characters, all given sufficient space, primarily consisting of a serial killer that stalks and films the prey before delivering a very violent death accompanied by unimaginable mutilation, a very pregnant crime squad detective on the hunt of the maniac, a hypnotist with his own load of troubles who gets caught up in the melee, and a stalwart ex-detective who has come back from the dead. The novel has heart-racing, pulse-pounding action and well developed, complex characters. There are many twists and turns, crowned by an entirely unexpected one revealing the stalker-killer at about 80% of the novel. Except for some drawn-out chases and somewhat far-fetched sequences, Stalker is a delectable thriller that will leave the reader fully satisfied. As usual I started in the middle of a series but it didn’t really seem to make a great deal of difference as far as the story went. I found out the series is written by a husband-and-wife team. Their main character is a very interesting Finnish detective named Joona Linna. He’s a bit of an odd duck...but a fairly likable guy who has marvelous instincts coupled with intense combat training. We don't see Linna for a while at the beginning... but once we do it's obvious that he's not fit company for man or beast. He tried to go into hiding but events soon send a fellow detective to find him. This book is nearly 600 pages and it is an interesting mystery that catches the reader up and keeps you turning the pages...however the police are supposedly intelligent people but they do the dumbest things throughout the entire book. Maybe things are different in Sweden...or perhaps something is lost in the translation. We also don’t get much information on any of the other characters. Some of the storyline verges on the incredible...but overall, it was a very, very long mystery. no reviews | add a review

"The Swedish National Crime Unit receives a video of a young woman in her home, clearly unaware that she's being watched. Soon after the tape is recieved, the woman's body is found horrifically mutilated. With the arrival of the next, similar video, the police understand that the killer is toying with them, warning of a new victim, knowing there's nothing they can do. Detective Margot Silverman is put in charge of the investigation, and soon asks Detective Joona Linna for help. Linna, in turn, recruits Erik Maria Bark, the hypnotist and expert in trauma, with whom Linna's worked before. Bark is leery of forcing people to give up their secrets. But this time, Bark is the one hiding things. Years before, he had put a man away for an eerily similar crime, and now he's beginning to think that an innocent man may be behind bars--and a serial killer still on the loose.."-- No library descriptions found. |
