I believe this is an important book to read by anyone interested in learning about the history and development of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Ecumenical, so called "mainline" churches such as this one have continued to experience a huge membership decline for 50 years or more.

While the book is beginning to be "long in the tooth," it still provides important information about the background and beginnings of this relatively new denomination. The author strives to describe the theological moorings as well as historical distinctives of the denomination.

Chapter 5 - The Eschatological Principle and Chapter 10 - What is the Role of a Denomination in a Post-Denominational Age? were added in the 1997 "revised and expanded" edition of the book.

The book is well researched and includes an index. ( )
