Can a story that begins with deception ever end well? Cissy Hillwood needs to leave her Alabama hometown to escape her abusive boyfriend, so she accepts an offer to work for her Uncle Forest in New York City. Sparks fly when she meets Forest's fiercest competitor, Tom Jenkins, but her uncle does not approve of their budding romance.   Tom is a Christian at night and on weekends, but he seems to leave his faith at the door when he gets to work. Yet the more time he spends with Cissy, the more he begins to question and reevaluate his business ethics.   As Cissy tries to keep her relationship with Tom a secret from her Uncle Forest, misunderstandings mount and conflicts arise, forcing Cissy to make a decision. Which should she choose: loyalty to her uncle or love for Tom?… (more)

Cissy Hillwood is an upbeat, "boy crazy" Southern gal and newbie to New York City who talks too much--and she knows it--but her determination to keep learning and growing as a person, in spite of the lingering sting of her past mistakes, makes her a likable heroine. The simple faith she shares with her new friend Charlene, the way they easily pray together, is nice to see.

Cissy's friendship with Dave is also a pleasant touch, though for a while, the development of their platonic relationship essentially outshines the development of Cissy's romance with Tom, as it's some time before there's much of anything between Cissy and Tom besides her regularly reflecting on how good-looking he is and the way he looks at her. There are places in the middle of the novel where the story seems to idle a bit too long in one spot or to rehash the same information instead of moving forward to new thoughts or events, but perhaps this is meant to give the pacing an unrushed feel.

Overall, Dixie Belle is a fun read with a refreshing mix of faith, and I'm keeping my eyes open for the second book in the Uptown Belles series.
