It's about your family and how you wouldn’t be you without your parents, and your parents, wouldn't be them without your grandparents, etc. The book is 2 sided, mom’s side and dad’s side, and while the wording has almost no changes, the illustrations really show each side of the family and the difference of where they came from. I love this book! First of all, I love Dušan Petričić's illustrations like woah, I always have. There's so much movement and character in them. I love the set up of this book, with the two sides of this kid's family tree starting from each end of the book and meeting in the middle for a large family portrait. It's beautiful and simple. This was an interesting book. It starts from both covers. A young boy is exploring his family tree. It starts with Great-Great-Granparents on his father's side and works it way down and does the same with his mother's side starting from the back. The illustrations are a hoot and kids would love them. A bonus is the diversity in this family. It is a great way to teach children about ancestry and what a family tree is. Not really a story, but that is not the point of the book. A great book to use in a classroom when dealing with family trees and heritage. Thanks to the publishers (Kids Can Press) and NetGalley, for letting me read a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. no reviews | add a review
"This one-of-a-kind picture book provides a beautifully simple introduction to the concept of family ancestry. It uses two stories in one to explore a small boy's family tree: the boy tells the family story of his father's side starting from the front of the book, and that of his mother's side starting from the back of the book. Four previous generations are introduced for each, from his great-great-grandparents to his parents. The grand finale in the center of the book reveals the boy's entire extended family, shown in one drawing with all the members from both sides identified by their relationship to him. Of particular interest is the cultural diversity of the boy's family, which includes European and Asian ancestors, and readers can visually interpret the family members' physical characteristics as they get passed on through the generations. Award-winning illustrator Dusan Petricic's classic artwork contains thoughtfully selected details with a touch of play and humor. And, since most of the story is told in the art, this is a wonderful tool for enhancing children's visual literacy as they spend time making connections and looking for clues. This book makes a great springboard for lessons on describing and sharing family histories and naming family relationships. Applicable in-class activities could include having children build their own family trees or imagine and draw portraits of their ancestors featuring period and cultural details. This title also lends itself to discussions on multiculturalism in families and in the larger community."-- No library descriptions found. |

There are twins, a gay uncle and his partner, multiple interracial marriages, and a random neighbor kid who photobombs the family's picture.
