"As winter deepens in snowbound Pollard, Illinois, thirty-something Francis Falbo is holed up in his attic apartment, recovering from a series of traumas: his mother's death, his beloved wife's desertion, and his once-ascendant rock band's irreconcilable break-up. Francis hasn't shaved in months, hasn't so much as changed out of his bathrobe-"the uniform of a Life in Default"-for nine days. Other than the agoraphobia that continues to hold him hostage, all he has left is his childhood home, whose remaining rooms he rents to a cast of eccentric tenants, including a pair of former circus performers whose daughter has gone missing. The tight-knit community has already survived a blizzard, but there is more danger in store for the citizens of Pollard before summer arrives. Francis is himself caught up in these troubles as he becomes increasingly entangled in the affairs of others, with results that are by turns disastrous, hysterical, and ultimately healing" --… (more)

I won this book through Goodreads and agreed to give it an honest review. At times the book was boring until Francis Falbo of Pollard, Illinois finally came down from his attic retreat. He is still recovering from his mother's death, his ex-wife's desertion, and the break up of his rock band. He hasn't showered and still wore the ratty robe plus the slippers his ex had given him for a present for nine days and believes they are his "uniform of default". His dad remarried and left him his childhood home that he turned into apartments and rented out He is in his mid thirties and became entangled in his renters lives which are eccentric. disastrous and hilarious, especially two of the tenants! What a bizarre journey through one mans insecurities and peccadillos. Upon being given his childhood home, a man upgrades it to include several apartments. We are treated to a glimpse into the lives of his renters, as well as his own. We also get to revel in his redemption and return to normality. It's an interesting ride, with many interesting situations and characters along the way. Enjoy! ( )

funny and sad. after losing his mother to cancer and his wife to another man, francis lives in his bathrobe and develops agoraphobia. with a little help from the tenants that rent rooms in his house, he finally manages to pick himself up and begin again! ( )
