Ptolus was the D&D 3rd/3.5 Edition playtest world. As such it's primary intent when to be played is to only require the three core books (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual) and nothing else. The book in fact is about as complete as anyone could want and certainly one of the few RPGs that I have read cover to cover. To me this counts for a lot as I never read RPGs straight through and Ptolus is by far the largest RPG out on the market (nearly 700 pages long).
The book breaks itself down into several sections for ease of reference. Additionally it has many, many cross references on each page to make finding relevent information quick and painless. This is in addition to a top notched index and ToC, both things which are sometimes lacking in RPGs.
The content is good although sometimes the setting information can be a bit dry depending on the area being described. Overall a DM cannot complain for lack of information and yet there is room to add their own personal touches.
This book is worth every penny of its cost! (
