A "Better Little Book" (a version of the familiar "Big Little Books") in which Skeezix, in an army training camp after enlisting during World War II, receives his orders and travels to North Africa as an artillery maintenance man. First there is a five-day furlough at home with Uncle Walt and Aunt Phyllis, and his fiancee Nina. Then it's off to war, where he has a variety of battles and adventures in the desert front, is eventually wounded and recovers at a base hospital. A little grim for a children's book (Skeezix faces real danger, and there are some deaths portrayed), this is probably directed more toward an older reader, especially since it was published during some of the darker days of the war. The story may or may not have been written by Frank King, but the illustrations are his, and plentiful. ( )
