While the author insists that this is a travel guide, I see it more as a peak into the minds of the Sicilians that live in Palermo or as Mr. Alajmo calls them, the city-dwellers. It describes in splendid detail the idiosyncrasies that compromises island life and I found myself pleasantly surprised at the many similarities between my own island and Sicily. Truth be told, Mr. Alajmo doesn't point out the obvious, beautiful places in Palermo you could go visit. He takes more time illustrating the fascination the city-dwellers have with death or why there is an ocean right in front of the city but they refuse to acknowledge it.

A great book for someone that truly wants to know more about Palermo. What makes it tick, what it wants, what it hides and what it loves. ( )
