The splintered remnants of an usurped princess' routed fleet run for their lives, find new allies and hints that the fate of the war may partly rest on ancient gifts from an elder race.

A space opera leaning heavily toward the Star Wars-y in its mix of traditional sci-fi props (galactic empire, spaceships, armored suits...) with a lot of thinly veiled fantasy imagery (nobility, ancient bloodline, sword-fights, magic, elves...).

Not very deep but distinctive characters. Genders and other traits are well-spread enough to avoid unfortunate implications. The villainess and main antagonist for most of the book is a villain who happens to be female rather than some walking illustration of how women in power are intrinsically terrible, balanced by two male villains, and three or four heroines on the other side.

For older teens and up ? While it remains tasteful and doesn't overwhelm the story, the various proclivities of part of the major adult characters and (more importantly) how they act them out are relatively key in defining them. ( )
