Don't read it if you don't plan on reading the rest though. ( )First novel of Card's that I've read; enjoyable read. The ending worked okay as I am reading the next two in the series, but if someone wanted to just read it standalone, I think it would leave things feeling unfinished/unsatisfying. Alvin is the seventh son of a seventh son. This gives him power he is yet to understand. Book 1 Of series. While I enjoy most alternative histories to see what if, this book has a brick to it that I would like to avoid. Card develops a good history for the US, but the problem I run into is his insistence of handing one of his characters the brick of religion that he smacks into each of the characters, though more frequently the reader. I understand that the character is a preacher, but I don't want to be preached AT when reading a book. I had plans of continuing with this series, but now doubt that will happen. A relaxing, enveloping kind of read, and one I think most people would find hard not to enjoy.
