Fortunately I didn’t have too high expectations of this Quiller short story when I learnt of its existence today. Having read all Hall’s Quiller books and enjoyed just about all of them, I didn’t expect this 1986 relic on the Adam Hall website to have enough elbow room to allow Hall to display his usual style with sudden jumps leaving the reader to catch up.

In this story the way that Quiller doesn’t even play a major role diminishes the story and the clue to the ending was a rather overt one midway through the story. Still, it was worth reading and I have also discovered how many other books Hall wrote, only two of which I’ve read so I may dip into more of his work if I come across it. ( )
