The novel is about healing set in a time of civil unrest when violence threatens the suburbs north New York City Immigrant laborers and a clandestine spiritual community committed to peace and justice form a coalition that goes beyond just mobilizing members to march and vote when they create a secret labor cartel to pressure wealthy homeowners into paying higher prices for services. An incident at a local nuclear medical lab further enmeshes illegal immigrants, a spiritual healer working with the Minyan Community, and a wealthy suburbinte who owns the facility. Escalating tensions between the two groups eventually challange the spiritual community's core injuction against the use of redemptive violence in their quest for the economic improvement of the immigrants.
