This is a classic book of Marc Brown’s Arthur collection that tells the story of Arthur and the school bully Binky Barnes. Arthur has huge plans for this year’s talent show, but he becomes frightened when Binky Barnes threatens to ruin it all. With the help of his friends, Arthur stands up to his bully and pulls the best April Fools trick of all time.[return][return]This book holds a familiar face to many students in classrooms today. Arthur is not only well-known from the books, but also the tv show. This book would benefit students because it sends a message that they should stand up to bullies.[return][return]Modern Fantasy[return]Reading Level: 2.7

In this funny picture book by Marc Brown, Arthur and his friend Buster prepare for the talent show. Rather than focusing on the tricks that he's going to perform, Arthur can't help but worry; the school bully Binky Barnes has threatened to punch him. The night before the show, he refuses to eat and has a difficult time sleeping. Then as he is performing his magic trick, he comes up with a great idea. With the help of his classmates, Arthur manages to overcome his fear and stand up to Binky. Arthur’s April Fool is cute because of the illustrations and jokes, and it makes me feel like I’m watching the cartoon show. I definitely recommend it as a read-aloud book for first graders. ( )
