This is about a rude cake who learns to be nice from a kind giant Cyclops. The first half of the book is about how the rude cake acts. The second half is about how the giant cyclopses act. The cake eventually learns his lesson.

"Rude Cakes" is about a young cake who isn't very polite. He bullies a marshmallow into giving him a balloon, he isn't grateful when he receives a birthday gift, he takes things that don't belong to him, and he never says please and thank you. Until one night, rude cakes has a dream about polite cyclopses. He realizes that it might be a good idea to be polite, and he changes his rude ways.

Rude Cakes made me laugh out loud in Powell's Bookstore, and I think it would be great fun for read aloud in class.
The large timid eyes of the little cakes or marshmallows are great, you can almost see them trembling on the page. I get a vicarious sort of weird pleasure out of the Rude Cake's gleeful selfishness (and eventual lesson), and kids would most certainly also laugh at its' mean antics. This book reminds me of some of Roald Dahl's morality and etiquette lessons in its slightly dark humor, but I think it's still bright and silly enough to do a good job getting kids started on thinking about what effect their actions have on others. The illustrations are dull, but also pop. I also enjoy a good story where someone learns an obvious lesson and can do something about it instantly too. These make for good, obvious and easy to follow lessons for children. This was a fun book!

The cake is rude in many ways, but the cyclops is polite in the same ways.
