OUR NATIONAL PASTIME AT ITS MOST INNOCENT -HALBERSTAM BRINGS A GREAT BASEBALL BOOK -NOT AS GOOD AS THE SUMMER OF 1949 WAS, BUT IF YOU GREW UP IN THAT ERA IT IS WARMING TO READ ABOUT PLAYERS YOU CONNECTED WITH. ( )Excellent book by a great author. He reports on an era in sports and the American culture that was unique. On one hand was the long-dominant Yankee team, almost entirely composed of white ballplayers, representing the old guard that was in decline. On the other hand, the Cardinal team, much more integrated with a rich cast of characters, was the up-and-coming young team that relied on speed and youth. The fact that these teams came together in the 1964 Series is quite a coincidence, given the tumultuous civil rights struggle going on in America at the same time. And it almost didn't happen - a historic collapse by the Phillies in the NL and a injury to Boog Powell in the AL allowed both teams to make the Series. Not as good as Summer of '49, but still worth the read. I was transported to 1964. It was like I was watching the events from the first row behind the dugout or the corner of the clubhouse. Well told story of the 1964 baseball season and the world series between the Cardinals and the Yankees. Peppered with colorful characters and their antics. An enthralling account of the events leading up to, and the 1964 World Series between the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Yankees were an aging powerhouse representing the status quo, with Mantle, Maris and Ford. The Cardinals were a young and hungry team with several talented black players such as Gibson, Flood and Brock. The series reflected a changing era in baseball and society. no reviews | add a review
