I felt like it was fairly poor young adult novel or maybe chick lit and was very disappointed - I thought I'd enjoy it as I usually like historical fiction but this was uninteresting and trivial. Not that long a book but it dragged. Should have done a bit more research before buying it! Muriel a thoroughly uninteresting character. Barbara and Miss Chapman the only ones I didn't despise. Seventeen-year-old Muriel Dearlove has weathered the Blitz unscathed, earning her keep in Miss Chapman's grocery shop. But with her sweetheart Bill away fighting and her friends conscripted into the WRENS and WAAF, life has become tedious for Muriel. Then one day an old friend returns from a stint in the Land Army. She is rosy cheeked and looks healthier than ever. Desperate for the chance to broaden her horizons, Muriel signs up to become a Land Girl. But Muriel soon discovers that getting back to the land is not all about making hay in the sunshine. No library descriptions found. |
