Some Kind of Wonderful by Sarah Morgan is a beautiful second chance at love romance for Brittany Forrest and Zach Flynn. This second novel in the delightful Puffin Island series is also a wonderful story of healing not just for the couple, but also for Zach as he finally begins to open his heart to his friends and makeshift family. Ten years earlier, Brittany and Zach's whirlwind marriage ended in divorce and they each went their separate ways. Brittany went on to college as planned and fulfilled her dream of becoming an archeologist. Zach turned his love of flying into a lucrative career as a private pilot in remote areas such as Alaska. Both have recently returned to Puffin Island and while their smoking hot attraction has not diminished in the intervening years, neither is ready to face their shared past or enter into another relationship. Brittany is open, trusting and positively radiates happiness. Her childhood on Puffin Island was pretty much a dream come true but she was eager to experience life off island as well. Her career has taken her all over the world but Puffin Island remains near and dear to her heart and when she needs a place to recuperate after breaking her wrist, Brittany heads back to the loving and close-knit community and her friends. Unbeknownst to Brittany, Zach, too, has returned to Puffin Island where he now runs a private airplane charter in addition to helping out at the wilderness camp that changed the entire course of his life. Despite turning his life around, he carries both invisible and visible scars from his abusive childhood and sadly, even into adulthood, he is emotionally closed off, unable to trust and incapable of seeing how much the people in his life love him. While some islanders (and Zach) continue to view him as the troubled youth he once was, most everyone else recognizes his kindness and compassion (which is brilliantly showcased in two particularly heartwarming (and poignant) scenes that are incredibly moving). While Brittany tries to remain unemotional and detached, she is still hurt and angry over their failed marriage. She grudgingly accepts his help and as their paths continue to cross, it is quite apparent to both of them their desire has not waned in the intervening years. Brittany hides her attraction behind indifference but Zach is not quite able to mask his passion for his ex. Older and wiser, she makes peace with their tumultuous past which eventually smooths the way for them to renew their friendship. Zach remains guarded as they give in to their explosive desire but Brittany respects his need for emotional space. Feeling less threatened, he begins to open up about his dysfunctional past and once he realizes Brittany is not going to push for more than he is ready to give, Zach begins to relax. However, just as it appears they have a good chance at a future together, a major misunderstanding threatens their happiness. Although a bit slow paced and repetitive for about the first hundred pages, Some Kind of Wonderful is nonetheless a captivating and emotional romance that is ultimately a very sweet and sexy addition to Sarah Morgan's Puffin Island series. I've been reading Sarah Morgan's Medicals and HPs for years and loved her voice. When Morgan began writing single title contemporaries I wondered how the transition would go, but I read her Vermont trilogy and really enjoyed it. This series continues the small town theme and also features interconnected characters, but it's sufficiently different in setting and storylines that it doesn't feel like a rehash to me. This installment focuses on Brittany, the owner of Castaway Cottage, and her rekindled romance with her ex-husband, Zack. Brittany and Zack were married for about a minute when they were very young. They divorced quickly and never saw each other again (mostly because Zack left Puffin Island). When Brittany comes back to Puffin Island to recuperate from a broken wrist and make some decisions about her future, she discovers that Zack has returned and is working there, mostly flying rich clients to their homes but also stepping in to help islanders in emergencies (he had a brief role in the previous book). Zack is a wounded bad-boy type of hero and we slowly learn why he ran out on Brittany. The reasons don't excuse his behavior so much as explain it, and after a while, as she understands things more fully, Brittany forgives him. I found her transformation pretty believable and it didn't ping my "the heroine does all the work" alarms. It's clear that both people still love each other, but Zack has to become more emotionally open for a relationship to work; Brittany pretty much has her act together and isn't going to get back together with anything less than a full commitment. The other main characters of the series and the townspeople also feature prominently in this story, with the townspeople being ultra-protective of Brittany and suspicious of Zack (casseroles are key forms of communication and approval). I liked the subplot of Ryan's long friendship with Zack and how that shapes his behavior toward both Zack and Brittany. There are some Britishisms in the book; they didn't jump out to me or pull me out of the story, but I know other people have stronger reactions to them. If you're not a fan of small-town romances this book may not work for you, but if you are, Morgan does them well. And while we get the setup for the last romance in the trilogy, between Skylar and Alec, it's well woven into the plot of this one. Again, Morgan is an auto-buy for me for both book and personal reasons, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. But I'm really liking this series. I only wish it were available in the US before December! When I got this copy in England a couple of weeks ago and didn't realize the release dates were so staggered. no reviews | add a review

It is focused on both Brittany Forrest and Zac Flynn, they were married ten years prior but the marriage only lasted ten days due to Zac panicking and then leaving.
When Brittany breaks her arm during an archaeology dig in Greece she has to fly home to Puffin Island to recuperate. What she doesn’t know is that Zac is still on the island and even worse was when the private planes pilot happened to be Zac. It makes for an awkward situation. Should she scream and shout at him for abandoning her ten years ago or pretend that it doesn’t bother her, she has moved on. She chooses that latter.
How can she forget her past and the only man she truly loved when he keeps turning up though?
This book had me hooked from the first chapter and I was willing for them to get back together. Okay so it didn’t work the first time, Zac has issues and to be fair, Brittany was young, naive and wanted to fix Zac, which is the last thing he wanted.
We also get to meet Brittany’s friends, I want to delve more into why Skylar acts so strange when she talks to Richard on the phone. I think there is a lot more going on with that relationship.
Emily’s story is in book #1 so I hope Skylar’s story is book 3.
Anyway I really liked this book, it was full of emotion and some humour too, and things that Zac had chose to keep hidden do eventually come out. I did find myself shouting at Brittany towards the end…’No, don’t’. But as with most romance novels we do get a happily ever after.
This is the first book I have read from Sarah Morgan and I can tell you now, it will not be the last. I will be purchasing book one very soon and will definitely get book 3 once it is published. ( )
