This book convinced me to track down her others. Interesting world and interesting scenario that causes 'dark ones.' Paen is a gorgeous hero and Sam is a fun heroine. The plot was a bit predictable but it's forgiven because of the lively dialogue and interesting secondary characters. ( )

Paen Scott was, if not happy, at least content with his life as a dark one. Determined to find a way to live without the necessity of finding a "Beloved" his research completed him, or so he thought.

When Finn and Paen Scott seek out half-elf Samantha Cross to help locate an ancient monkey statue it is a boon to her new investigative agency. The thing is, whenever she gets close to the enigmatic Paen Scott her libido goes into overdrive and business is the last thing on her mind.

Will a Master of the Night Dark One and his sun loving unwanted half-elf Beloved be able to get past the bad guys to find the statue and rescue Paen's mother's soul? You have to read to find out :-)

Like all of Katie MacAlister's stories Even Vampires Get the Blues was equal parts humor, adventure and romance. Although I still prefer her Aisling Grey novels to her vampire ones I certainly do find them entertaining and lively, quite likely to leave you with a smile on your face at the end. If you're looking for campy romances like Mary Janice Davidson's without the attitude I would certainly suggest these Beloved books. ( )

Cute addition to MacAlister's vampire mythology. This one finds a half elf detective contracted by a Dark One who doesn't want a beloved and finds that she is his. It includes a mystery involving finding out where an ancient statue is in order to save a soul. ( )

As usual Katie MacAlister cracks me up. She gives such a fun spin on fantasy characters.

Basically, Paen is a Scottish Dark One (who does in fact appear in a kilt!) who has five days to find an artifact to save his mother's soul. So he turns to half-elf Sam and her faery/lingerie model cousin. Hilarity ensues (particularly because Sam is a sun-elf...oh, sunburn in hysterical places).

Paen doesn't WANT a Beloved because he doesn't want to give up his independence. When it turns out that Sam is his Beloved against his will, well, he's not the most grateful vampire in the world.

Anyway, this was great fun with less domineering alpha male tendencies than her other heroes. Paen's brothers and Sam's cousin provide excellent comic relief, and there are plenty of twists in the plot (though I couldn't help but wonder when the protagonists would figure out one of them) to keep it intriguing.

So far this is undoubtedly my favorite in the series. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 045121823X, Mass Market Paperback)

Paen Scott is a Dark One: a vampire without a soul. And his mother is about to lose hers, too, if Paen can't repay a debt to a demon by finding a relic known as the Jilin God-in five days. When he hires half-elf private investigator Samantha Cosse to help him, he sets her elf senses tingling. Which makes it pretty much impossible to keep their relationship on a professional level. Especially since Sam is convinced that she is Paen's Beloved-the woman who can give him back his soul, whether he wants it or not...
